Los Angeles Art Gallery at 1820 and artist/curator Jerry Weems are seeking artists to participate in a one night only group exhibition on Saturday, February 28th, 2015 from 6-11PM, "The Life and Time of Blacks, Negroes, and Colored Folks". 

 

This exhibition showcases the work of African American Artists who explore notions of race,idenity, cultrue and image. These artists do not claim to be one monolithic paradigm; instead they reflect the diversity of thoughts and aesthetics within African American Culture. In deconstructing racial stereotypes, these groups of artists challenge ideas and myths which have historically framed African Americans in a negative and derogatory light. Accepted Mediums

• Watercolor and oil paintings on canvas or paper

• All printmaking mediums

• Drawings on paper

• Photography (digital or film)

• Collage and mixed media including asssemblage, fiber, and textile art 

• No artworks may exceed 48” at largest 

 

Display Requirements

• All artwork submitted for review must be available for the exhibition and ready to hang with wire and/or eye hooks.

• No saw tooth hook hanging will be accepted.

• All installation artworks must be installed by the artist/and or artist assistant. Artists must provide their own hanging and installation equipment.

 

Submission Guidelines

• All entries must be mailed in the form of a CD with jpg. images or printed photos to:

• 3 images per submission

• CD portfolios must include a detailed ID list for all artworks: medium, date of completion, and dimensions. All images must be 72dpi, min 1920 pixels.  

• Submitted printed material should be on matte-photo quality paper, also detailing: medium, date of completion, and dimensions on the bottom right

• corner of each page. Please indicate if there is a specific “TOP” to each image.

• Please include a price list for all submitted artwork, or specify if the art is not for sale (NFS).  

• Artists statement and a brief essay addressing the cultural theme of the exhibition.

• $50 non-refundable submission fee. Please make check payable to “JERRY WEEMS” and include this in your submission packet.

• Artists who wish to have their submission materials returned must provide a self-addressed stamped envelope.

• All submitted artworks must have been created within the past 3 years.

• Improperly labeled artwork and incomplete portfolio submissions may be rejected.
